About CSC 2010

University of Toronto
Department of Chemistry Profile

The department, with its hub in the Lash Miller Laboratories on the St. George campus in downtown Toronto, is a world-class and exciting centre for research and teaching in the major areas of chemical science. Our geography includes teaching and research activities at our campuses at the University of Toronto at Mississauga and the University of Toronto at Scarborough. We take pride in promoting excellence in every aspect of student development through teaching, research, and social interaction. With 50 faculty members, 30 staff and 300+ graduate and postdoctoral students, our department organizes its research and teaching by field: analytical, biological, environmental, inorganic, polymers and materials and physical (experimental and theoretical). Interdisciplinary research is encouraged with strong connections to colleagues in the medical, pharmacy and engineering faculties.

All three campuses incorporate modern instructional facilities, research laboratories and instrumentation. The physical infrastructure benefited enormously from the recent construction of the Davenport Research Labs, renovation of the Lash Miller laboratories, and renewal of service laboratories, with new buildings at Scarborough and Mississauga as well. Our department has a wide variety of facilities and services including our X-Ray Analysis Lab, Liquid and Solid State NMR, Analest (analytical service facility), Mass Spectrometry Lab, chemical stores, glassblowing, electronics and machine shops. The A.D. Allen Library is fully computerized but also retains an impressive core collection.

Our faculty members are recognized widely for their research and innovation and include Canada’s chemistry Nobel Laureate, John Polanyi. The dedicated teaching staff have received highly competitive honors. Our award-winning technical and administrative teams excel with many notable achievements. In recent years the department has undergone significant renewal in our personnel, adding twenty new research and teaching faculty. The diversity of our faculty’s interests is also a reflection of their diverse personal origins and the notable number of our extremely successful cohort of female professors.

The department always welcomes visitors. We share our enthusiasm through an open colloquium program and numerous social events. It is a caring, exciting and diverse environment in an exciting city.
